On midsummer's day I gave a Mad Hatter's tea-party in our atelier in Neukölln, and sang a few of my new songs. This was my first appearance as Merlin Dietrich and in fact my first live performance as a singer-songwriter since the old days, apart from a brief try-out in Margate last year. Alice was played by my friend Esther-Maria Ufer. Akim was the White Rabbit, Valentin Hoofmann was the Dormouse (and also, wittily, the doorman) and Daniela Telle, who did my make-up and styling and created the fabulous hat, served tea.
